Abstract

The study investigates the crucial role of native shrubs, such as Ephedra californica and Larrea tridentata, in supporting reptile and amphibian communities in the central drylands of Southwestern USA. These shrubs provide essential thermal refuges and habitat heterogeneity, which are vital for the survival and diversity of ectothermic species facing climate change. The research utilizes a large dataset of reptile and amphibian occurrences and satellite imagery to examine the relationship between shrub density and species abundance, richness, and evenness. Findings reveal that increasing shrub density significantly enhances the diversity and abundance of reptiles and amphibians, especially in arid regions. The study also highlights the potential negative effects of high shrub densities on other plant species and the importance of maintaining a balance in vegetation to support diverse ecosystems.
