Abstract

This chapter delves into the phenomenon of cybersecurity fatigue among students in higher education institutions, exploring its causes, effects, and potential solutions. The study identifies key factors contributing to cybersecurity fatigue, including frequent training, information overload, and complex compliance requirements. It also examines the different types of fatigue, such as advice-related and action-related fatigue, and their impact on students' compliance with cybersecurity measures. The research employs a qualitative method, utilizing semi-structured interviews with students to gather insights. The findings reveal that cybersecurity fatigue can lead to non-compliant behaviors, such as reusing passwords or ignoring update notifications, due to the perceived inconvenience and complexity of security measures. However, some students demonstrate compliant behaviors despite their fatigue, highlighting the importance of risk awareness and perceived efficacy. The study also discusses the role of institutional policies and awareness campaigns in addressing cybersecurity fatigue. It concludes with recommendations for reducing fatigue and improving compliance, such as streamlining authentication processes and providing interactive training sessions. This chapter offers valuable insights for higher education institutions seeking to enhance their cybersecurity practices and create a more secure digital environment for students.
