Abstract

The article delves into the significant influence of natural joints on the evolution of fracturing curves in hydraulic fracturing processes. It begins with an introduction to hydraulic fracturing and the challenges posed by natural joints, which are difficult to detect directly. The study then reviews previous research on fracturing curves and their relationship with natural joints, highlighting the need for a quantitative understanding of this relationship. The TOUGH-AiFrac simulator is introduced as a tool to numerically investigate the influence of natural joints on fracturing curves. The article presents a detailed numerical model with a natural joint and analyzes the effects of joint permeability and length on fracturing curve evolution. The findings reveal that natural joints significantly impact pressure drop and recovery stages, with higher joint permeability leading to larger pressure drops and faster pressure changes. The study concludes by emphasizing the potential of fracturing curves as a tool to estimate the properties of natural joints, paving the way for more effective hydraulic fracturing operations.
