Abstract

The article investigates the critical influence of welded joint microstructure on the corrosive properties of X70 steel, a material widely used in oil and gas pipelines. It focuses on the heat-affected zone (HAZ), which is particularly vulnerable to sulfide stress cracking (SSC) due to rapid heating and uneven cooling during welding. This process leads to the formation of brittle microstructures that initiate and propagate cracks, compromising pipeline integrity. The study employs simulation modeling to replicate the thermal cycles and microstructures of the HAZ, revealing the most susceptible regions to SSC. Through detailed metallographic analysis and corrosion testing, the research identifies the overheated and incomplete recrystallization zones as the primary failure points. The findings underscore the necessity of comprehensive testing procedures that include all zones of the welded joint, not just the base and weld metals. This holistic approach is essential for enhancing the performance reliability of pipelines in hydrogen sulfide environments, addressing a significant gap in current standards and practices.
