Abstract

The chapter examines the influence of women on the board of directors on the efficiency of Brazilian Credit Unions, which have seen rapid growth in recent years. It delves into the role of the board of directors in corporate governance and the challenges women face in achieving leadership positions due to the 'glass ceiling' phenomenon. The study hypothesizes that women's participation in governance roles positively correlates with the growth of Brazilian Credit Unions. Using a sample of 607 credit unions, the research finds that while women's presence on boards is higher when a female CEO is in place, female CEOs tend to underperform compared to their male counterparts. The findings also reveal a negative correlation between women's participation and cooperative growth, suggesting that women may be more risk-averse in management. The chapter concludes by highlighting the importance of structural measures to increase women's representation in these organizations.
