Abstract

This chapter examines the pivotal role of seaport infrastructure in global trade and state security, focusing on the theoretical foundations of seaport operations and their economic impact. It traces the historical evolution of ports from simple cargo transshipment hubs to sophisticated logistics centers, highlighting the transformative effects of digital technologies and automation. The text delves into the concept of Logistics 4.0 and the emerging physical Internet, illustrating how major ports like Rotterdam and Antwerp are leveraging these advancements for safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The chapter also addresses the disparities between large and small ports in adopting Industry 4.0 technologies, noting that a significant portion of global ports are still unprepared for digitization. Furthermore, it explores the modernization stages of seaports, from first-generation ports with basic operational functions to fifth-generation ports that emphasize customer service, supply chain integration, and advanced technological applications. The chapter concludes with a detailed assessment of the Klaipeda State Port, evaluating its compliance with NATO and European Commission standards and its readiness to support both civilian and military logistics. This in-depth analysis provides a compelling narrative on the strategic importance of seaport infrastructure in the modern world.
