Until today, Walter Christian Steinbach is considered one of the fathers of the Leipzig Neuseenland, the post-mining landscape in the Leipzig region. In the following interview, he discusses, among other things, his special connection to the area and its current development.
Walter Christian Steinbach born in 1944 in Zwenkau, is a German politician. He was a member of the Saxon state parliament from 1990 to 1991 and district president of Leipzig from 1991 to 2010. As a mathematics graduate from Leipzig University, he also worked for several years as a university lecturer and, after studying theology, he was a pastor in Rötha from 1975 to 1985. In 1988, Steinbach collected 100,000 signatures and 100,000 marks with the campaign "One Mark for Espenhain" against the environmental pollution caused by the mining of brown coal in the Leipzig area. This made the protest the largest unauthorised collection of signatures in the GDR. Mr Steinbach is considered one of the fathers of the Leipziger Neuseenland, the post-mining landscape in the Leipzig region.
