Abstract

The chapter delves into the Loanable Funds Cycle and the variability of the deposit base, utilizing Minsky’s Financial Instability Hypothesis to model the cash flows underlying the monetary system. It explores how the behaviour of banks, households, and firms influences the creation and destruction of money through loans and mortgages, leading to boom and bust cycles. The analysis highlights the role of Ponzi finance in fueling speculative bubbles and the subsequent financial crises, providing insights into the dynamics of economic instability. The study also examines the impact of monetary policy and fiscal stabilizers on economic recovery, offering a comprehensive view of the monetary system's endogenous shocks and the potential for future financial crises.
