“Emergence” is the idea that wholes can be greater than the sums of their parts (Bedau and Humphreys 2008). “Greater” in what sense though? First, in the sense of forming a pattern of some kind. Second, in the sense of influencing the behavior of the observer. Third, and finally, in the sense of possessing a causal power not possessed by its constituent parts in isolation. Philosophers refer to these types as “property emergence,” “epistemological emergence,” and “ontological emergence,” respectively. …
