Abstract

The article delves into the complexities of reducing energy consumption through a case study of student air conditioning in Indonesia. It critiques the behaviour change approach, which focuses on individual behaviour, and social practice theory, which emphasizes societal influences. The study reveals that while students express pro-environmental views, these do not translate into action due to the practical and social constraints of their daily activities. The paper argues for a reconfiguration of existing practices to embed ecological meanings into everyday activities, highlighting the importance of designing interventions that consider the social and material contexts of energy use.
