Abstract

The aggregates consist approximately 85% of the total volume in asphalts pavements, and their properties influence directly their behavior. Therefore, it is essential to pre-study aggregates before using them in asphalt pavements. This paper evaluates the geological-geotechnical properties of high-grade metamorphic felsic rock, for use in asphaltic paving, and their issues of adhesiveness to the asphalt binder. The aggregates studied here come from Itereré Quarry, located in Campos dos Goytacazes, a northern region of Rio de Janeiro state. The quarry provided for the study aggregates in granulometry grit 0, 1, and stone powder. The geological study showed that the aggregate is a quartz-feldspathic rock, with felsic composition, framed in the granulite metamorphic facies. The aggregates show open graduation, and the maximum aggregate size is 19.1 mm. The real coarse aggregate density is 2.72 g/cm3 and the fine aggregate is 2.65 g / cm3, moreover, the water absorption was 1%. The mechanical resistance determined in tests was 30% abrasion Los Angeles and 12.7% loss of chock in Treton. The interaction of the aggregate with the asphalt binder from the adhesion test was unsatisfactory. It can be seen that the low percentage of asphaltene in the asphalt binder had a negative influence on aggregate adhesiveness.
