Abstract

In Chap. 11, the details of two models based on the von Mises yield and failure surfaces have been presented. One of the models simulates the isotropic hardening behavior and the other simulates the kinematic hardening behavior. The latter has the potential for simulating the plastic behavior of materials during a cyclic loading. These von Mises models may be used to model the total stress-based constitutive behavior of soil. However, the effective stress-based constitutive behavior of soil involves two other aspects that the von Mises models presented in Chap. 11 are incapable of simulating. These aspects are (1) the dependence of elastic and plastic stress–strain relations on mean normal pressure (“pressure-dependency”) and (2) the development of plastic volumetric strain during deviatoric stress loading (plastic dilatancy). The Cam-clay model (Schofield and Wroth 1968) is intended to fill this gap.
