Abstract

The study investigates the narrow reach of targeted corrections on misperceptions about election integrity. It tests whether debunking specific false claims about voter and election fraud affects broader beliefs and attitudes, or if the effects are confined to the specific claim. The research focuses on the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election, where false claims about ballot printing errors were widely reported. The study finds that while specific fact-checks reduce beliefs in targeted false claims, they do not influence broader beliefs about election fraud or confidence in elections. This highlights a significant limitation in current fact-checking strategies, suggesting the need for further research into how to combat broader narratives effectively.
