Abstract

Air pollution poses a significant threat to public health and environmental sustainability, originating from various sources, including industrial emissions, transportation, agriculture, and natural events. This chapter explores the key pollutants—such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3)—that impact human health and ecosystems. It also examines the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to air quality, specifically targeting reductions in deaths from pollution (SDG 3.9.1), ensuring access to clean energy (SDG 7.1.2), and reducing the environmental impact of urban areas (SDG 11.6.2). The chapter highlights the health effects of pollutants, their sources, and the need for integrated strategies to mitigate pollution through technological advancements, regulatory measures, and international cooperation. Reducing pollution is vital for sustainable development, healthier urban environments, and combating climate change.
