Abstract

The rapid expansion of industrial and transportation sectors worldwide has led to alarming increases in atmospheric CO2 levels, posing a severe threat to air quality and human health. This chapter presents a detailed analysis of CO2 emissions from conventional building and infrastructure development, using dynamic global environmental modeling to assess emissions from the 1960s to the 2020s. The study reveals a disturbing trend: if current practices continue, CO2 levels will reach an unbreathable 1200 ppm within 75 years, causing significant respiratory issues for the global population. The chapter underscores the urgent need to transition to sustainable development technologies in the building and infrastructure sectors to mitigate CO2 emissions and secure a breathable future. By examining the sequestration of CO2 by oceans and land vegetation, the research provides a comprehensive view of the carbon cycle and the potential impacts of unchecked emissions. The findings serve as a stark reminder of the imminent danger and the critical importance of immediate action to address the climate crisis.
