Abstract

The chapter investigates the plunging of hyperpycnal plumes on tilted beds through three-dimensional large-eddy simulations. It examines the flow transition in the plunge zone, which is crucial for understanding ecosystem health, dam management, and geological records. The study presents an original dataset covering the entire spatio-temporal evolution of the plunge phenomenon, including relevant quantities like flow depth, velocity, and density. This dataset, available online, supports future research by providing detailed information on the mechanisms governing hyperpycnal flows. The simulations are validated against experimental data and analytical models, highlighting the importance of numerical simulations in capturing all flow variables. The results show the influence of parameters like flow discharge and sediment concentration on the plunging process and the potential for bed erosion. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the significance of numerical simulations in providing comprehensive data for various research fields.
