Abstract

The article delves into the potential application of mining wastes and slag as radiation shielding materials, focusing on the Philippines' rich mineral resources. It discusses the characterization of these materials using EpiXS software, which calculates various shielding parameters such as photon cross-sections, linear attenuation coefficients, and half-value layers. The study compares these materials with conventional shielding materials like cement and clay, highlighting their effectiveness in shielding against X-rays and gamma rays. The research is particularly relevant given the Philippines' growing mining industry and the need for sustainable waste management solutions. The findings could significantly impact the development of radiation shielding materials and the management of mining waste.
