Democratic politics requires informed citizens who are motivated and able to participate actively in decision-making processes governing public affairs and to monitor effectively those whom they have entrusted to make decisions on their behalf. It is only under such conditions that we can expect politics to accommodate the interests of citizens and to develop appropriate solutions to their problems. The most important provider of information in modern societies is the news media.
