Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate problems posed by light-controlled intersections with cranked priority, a design often implemented to manage high traffic intensity at turns. The research highlights the confusion and conflict situations that arise due to the interplay between traffic lights and road signs, leading to frequent accidents. Through a detailed analysis of a typical intersection in Ostrava, the chapter demonstrates how the current design can be problematic, even when traffic lights are present. The study includes capacity calculations and microsimulation models to assess traffic quality and safety. A significant finding is the proposal to reconstruct such intersections into roundabouts or straighten the right-of-way on the main road, which could drastically reduce conflict situations and enhance overall traffic safety. The chapter also discusses the implications for both developing and developed countries, offering valuable insights for future traffic management strategies.
