Abstract

This study delves into the psychology of involution, a phenomenon characterized by intensified individual effort without proportional gain, and its impact on well-being and societal development. Through latent profile analysis, four distinct profiles of involution perception are identified: Racing Rat, Placid Dove, Ambitious Bee, and Couch Potato. Each profile exhibits unique psychological responses and adjustment patterns, with Ambitious Bee and Placid Dove being adaptive, while Racing Rat and Couch Potato being maladaptive. The study explores the sociocultural factors, such as socioeconomic status and cultural tightness-looseness, that influence these profiles. Notably, cultural differences are observed, with the Racing Rat profile being more prevalent in China and the Ambitious Bee profile dominating in Western cultures. Network analysis positions involution perception as a critical variable between macro-level sociocultural predictors and micro-level psychological outcomes. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to mitigate the negative impacts of involution on individual well-being and societal development.
