Abstract

This article delves into the intricate relationship between rock brittleness and Los Angeles abrasion (LAA) values, crucial for assessing aggregate quality in construction and mining. The study evaluates five different brittleness indices derived from uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) to determine their correlation with LAA values. Notably, the research finds that brittleness indices B3, B4, and B5 exhibit moderate inverse-logarithmic relationships with LAA across various rock types, with stronger correlations observed in sedimentary and igneous rocks. The study also highlights the significance of normalizing LAA values with respect to UCS, which significantly improves correlation strength. Empirical prediction equations for LAA are developed based on these indices, validated through experiments with 16 independent rock samples. The findings suggest that these indices can reliably predict LAA values, offering a robust framework for estimating aggregate abrasion resistance. The article concludes by discussing the limitations and potential future directions for research in this field, emphasizing the importance of considering rock brittleness in aggregate quality assessment.
