One of the key issues for engine developers is reducing emissions. The interim goal of a 30 % cut in CO2 emissions by 2030 represents a much more significant challenge than we originally thought, because emission levels have risen in recent years. Instead of moving closer to our targets, we are now further away from them. There are a number of reasons for this, but the construction of new infrastructure and the production of new vehicles in particular have led to higher levels of climate gases in the transport sector. The positive impact of fleet renewal, increases in efficiency and electrification on the total emissions from the transport sector will not be seen for several years. Therefore, the only effective means of consistently cutting emissions seems to be to reduce the climate gases produced by our existing fleet. …
