Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical role of additive manufacturing (AM) in advancing the sustainability of the aerospace sector. It begins with an introduction to AM technology, emphasizing its unique ability to create highly customized components through structural optimization and the use of novel materials. The chapter then explores the significant advantages of AM for sustainable aerospace, such as weight reduction, reduced material processing energy requirements, and a simplified supply chain. Additionally, it highlights the future opportunities presented by AM, including in-space manufacturing capabilities and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), which are crucial for future space exploration and sustainment. By leveraging AM, the aerospace industry can move towards more efficient, environmentally conscious operations, making this chapter a must-read for those interested in the intersection of technology, sustainability, and aerospace innovation.
