Abstract

The article delves into the critical role of fragility in thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL), a field where the behavior of lubricants under extreme pressure and temperature conditions is crucial. Traditional models often overlook the fragility property, which significantly affects the viscosity of lubricants. The study introduces the concept of fragility and its impact on viscosity, highlighting the need for more accurate modeling. It presents high-pressure viscometer data for dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a low-viscosity diester, and compares different correlation models, including the Improved Yasutomi correlation and the Roelands equation. The research demonstrates that ignoring fragility can lead to substantial inaccuracies in predicting friction and film thickness in TEHL simulations. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating fragility into TEHL models to achieve more precise and reliable results.
