The Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell is designed as a special plug-in hybrid. It generates electrical energy using a fuel cell. For energy storage, the vehicle consists of both a hydrogen tank system and a battery, which can also be charged from an external source using the plug-in technology. Due to the fuel cell system and the hydrogen tank, special requirements address the safety in case of an accident. In the article, Daimler explains the special safety concept and how all safety-relevant components such as the hydrogen tanks, gas-carrying parts and high-voltage components have been integrated in a crash-compliant manner. Besides carrying out the usual, standardized crash tests, the crash worthiness was confirmed by conducting special component level testing and additional crash test modes. …
