Abstract

The SFIR Test is a groundbreaking method for characterizing the volumetric behavior of polymeric foams under hydrostatic compression. Unlike traditional tests using fluids or gases, the SFIR Test employs a nearly incompressible elastomer cylinder to transmit pressure, eliminating sealing and safety concerns. This innovative approach allows for easy setup and the achievement of high pressures, making it ideal for applications such as automotive jounce bumpers. The test is validated through finite element analysis and experimental data, demonstrating its accuracy and reliability. The article presents a detailed post-processing procedure to determine the pressure and volume ratio of the foam sample from the global load and displacement data. This method can be applied to various types of polymeric foams, including those with open or closed cells, without fluid exchange. The results obtained from tests on different foam densities show consistent trends and limited scattering, confirming the test's effectiveness. The SFIR Test offers a practical and efficient solution for characterizing the mechanical response of polymeric foams under hydrostatic compression, with potential applications in various industries.
