16. The Study of Aesthetic Perception of Fractals

Abstract

Every fractal geometry revolves around the dimension, which serves as a reasonable foundation for an invariant between fractal objects. Traditional three-dimensional geometric methods are inadequate for measuring fractals, necessitating the use of a fractal dimension. There have been very few studies on the topic of fractals, and the available research publications lack a comprehensive understanding of fractals and their complexity. Also, a limited number of empirical studies were observed on fractal perception. Because there is not a lot of information regarding human perception of fractals, the goal is to accurately clarify and study the aesthetic perception of fractals. Initially, 50 shapes were generated artificially by varying images of the fractals. From there, a total of 9 numbers of stimuli were selected on the basis of their complexity level. Then the stimuli were presented to the subjects. The presentation was done with a forced choice system between the parallel comparison of stimuli. Then the stimuli were rated by the subjects through questionnaires. The subjective reaction to the aesthetic impression of fractals was recorded during the process. In forced choice experiment, the most visually appealing images were the moderately perceived complex fractals. Particularly, during individual subjective rating of fractals, the images that observers to be least complex found to be the most aesthetically pleasant. This study sheds some light on how subjects responded to fractals of different levels of complexity. The overall experiment justifies that the fractals have yet to be precisely understood to enable aesthetic experiences.
