Abstract
This chapter details the main economic and technical issues which result from a growing share of variable renewable energies in the overall power generation mix. It defines a model to analyze the impact of the penetration of renewable on a grid, then reviews both their current impact and its projected evolution in the coming decades for eight grid systems around the world, focusing notably on the structural evolution of power generation, peak load management, balancing and stability issues and grid reinforcement issues. It also looks at how the growing penetration of renewable energies disrupts the traditional model of power markets, and concludes with an overview of policy challenges.
