About this book

Most contemporary notions of the fairly recent concept ‘smart mobility’ portray an imminent transition of similar socio-economic consequences as the shift from horses to automobiles did 100 years ago. Present book thus offers an in-depth look at the variables involved in the equation of smart mobility acceptance (1) and envisaged institutional change (2).

Both views are embedded in the Multi-Level Perspective. Study 1 develops a structural equation model in SmartPLS. Use cases cover eBikes (N=537), mobility-as-a-service (N=531), and fully automated vehicles (N=558). Based on the results, acceptance relies on five factors: performance expectancy, facilitating conditions, social influence, habit, and hedonic motivation.

Study 2 applies the Institutional Role Model (IRM) to better understand system dynamics. Thus, the smart mobility ecosystem is mapped in a structured manner. It identifies nine institutions, as well as four technical and four economic roles. Results of interviews with experts (N=8) support the IRM’s significance as a vision provider for a new mobility regime.

In the end, these two perspectives amalgamate. This opens a sophisticated space for public debate about the commencing transition to smart mobility.

This section provides an overview of acceptance theory, from the basic concept of acceptance to the latest revelations in research. Generally, the results of the below theory recap indicate that research on acceptance of new technology is a heterogeneous field depending on whether the focus is conceptual, methodological or technological. I conclude that for the analysis of technology systems such as smart mobility, comprehensive behavioral modeling is the most promising approach.

Chapter 3. The Institutional Perspective
Abstract
The basic assumption of this work is that linear mobility is essentially developing into a service-oriented fabric of interactions. Such an evolution will likely enforce the alteration of roles and actors in the automobile regime. Such processes offer space for pioneering and realigning previous strategic, functional, and task-related positions. Institutions (actors) will increasingly ask themselves what position they can take within a new framework of mobility provision. Untapped market potentials open up when agility is reflected in technical solutions as well as in the economic environment.

Chapter 4. Conclusion
Abstract
The starting point of this work was recognizing that the developments surrounding the smart mobility concept will strongly influence future transportation. As is being discussed by the transportation community, changes induced by ubiquitous connectivity or automation are very likely transformational. Within society, stakeholders and users have already begun facing an automobile regime that displays the first cracks. Uncertainty and ambiguity arise through the emergence of complex and highly volatile changes.
