Abstract

The article investigates the challenge posed by generative AI, specifically GPT-4, in creating online reviews that are indistinguishable from human-written ones. Through two experimental studies, the authors demonstrate that both human readers and AI detectors struggle to differentiate between genuine and AI-generated reviews. This finding has significant implications for the credibility of review platforms, consumer trust, and the potential for manipulation by malicious actors. The study also discusses the broader impact on marketing strategies, regulatory frameworks, and the evolution of consumer review platforms in the age of advanced AI.
