Abstract

Pedestrian safety remains a critical global concern, with pedestrians accounting for a significant portion of road fatalities worldwide. This chapter explores the underutilization of pedestrian crossing facilities, a pressing issue that has received limited attention despite substantial investments in infrastructure. By conducting a systematic literature review, the chapter identifies key qualitative and quantitative factors that influence the underutilization of pedestrian crossings, including safety perceptions, comfort, convenience, and demographic characteristics. The analysis reveals that factors such as fear of crime, infrastructure inadequacies, and the presence of on-street parking significantly impact pedestrian behavior. The chapter also highlights the importance of considering both qualitative and quantitative parameters in assessing pedestrian facility usage, providing insights into the development of effective strategies to enhance pedestrian safety and infrastructure utilization. Through a detailed examination of global studies and the identification of key indicators, this chapter offers a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities in improving pedestrian crossing facilities, making it an essential read for anyone interested in urban development and public safety.
