Abstract

The chapter delves into the extensive railway network of Ukraine, highlighting the need for modern, energy-efficient rolling stock to meet passenger transportation demands. It focuses on the current fleet of diesel trains and the potential for significant fuel savings through the integration of hybrid powertrains. The study centers on the DEL-02 diesel train, simulating its performance on a non-electrified route between Lubotyn and Boromlya stations. The analysis reveals that energy storage systems can reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%, making them a viable solution for enhancing energy efficiency and reducing harmful emissions. The chapter also explores various methods of implementing energy storage, including supercapacitors and plug-in systems, and discusses the broader implications for sustainable railway operations. The detailed traction calculations and performance data provide a compelling case for the adoption of hybrid technologies in suburban rail transport.
