Abstract

This chapter delves into the historical and terminological analysis of ESG investing, tracing its evolution from socially responsible investing (SRI) to modern ESG practices. Key milestones, such as the establishment of the first public offering of a fund that excluded investments in “sin industries” in 1928 and the role of ESG investing in ending apartheid in South Africa, are explored. The chapter also examines the various terms used in the literature connected to the idea of “socially responsible investing,” including “ethical investing,” “green investing,” and “ESG investing.” The analysis sets out how terms are interpreted in this dissertation and is the basis of a typological analysis of ESG investors. Additionally, the chapter discusses the historical context of ESG investing, including the impact of the Vietnam War and the emergence of the First Spectrum Fund in 1971. The chapter concludes with an overview of the current state of ESG investing and its potential future developments.
