Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical issues faced by concrete bridge decks due to vehicular loads, climatic agents, and water or salt penetration. It highlights the use of synthetic thin pavements as a countermeasure, exploring their thermal expansion and bond strength with the concrete support. The study includes a laboratory investigation of four different pavement solutions, assessing their thermal behavior and bond strength under various conditions. The results reveal that synthetic resin-based pavements, particularly those using bauxite aggregate, show promising performance in terms of thermal compatibility and bond strength, even in adverse conditions. This research aims to promote the use of these innovative pavements in European countries, contributing to the longevity and safety of bridge decks.
