Abstract

This chapter delves into the development and analysis of lightweight artificial aggregates (LAAs) derived from industrial by-products, including municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) and marble sludge, and their integration with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in concrete. The study focuses on the preparation of single-bonded and double-bonded LAAs, their physical properties, and their impact on the mechanical and thermal performance of concrete. Key topics include the design and curing of LAAs, the effects of PET addition on concrete properties, and the comparison of artificial aggregates with natural aggregates. The results indicate that while the use of LAAs and PET reduces the compressive strength of concrete, it significantly enhances thermal insulation properties. This makes the material suitable for non-structural applications, contributing to sustainability in the construction sector by reducing natural resource exploitation and waste disposal. The chapter concludes with insights into the potential of these innovative materials for promoting a circular economy in construction.
