Abstract

The article delves into the complexities of thermodynamic scaling in supersonic retropropulsion (SRP) flowfields, focusing on the higher-thrust regime. It discusses the challenges of predicting SRP dynamics due to the wide parameter space and the need for reliable scaling parameters. The study experimentally explores the influences of gas thermodynamic variables such as molecular weight, temperature, and the ratio of specific heats on SRP interactions. It evaluates the effectiveness of momentum-based and mass flow rate-based parameters in scaling shock standoff distances and bow shock shapes, providing valuable insights into the behavior of SRP flowfields. The results show that the momentum ratio is a superior scaling parameter, accounting for gas thermodynamic effects and Mach number dependencies. The article also highlights the need for further research to fully understand the influences of gas properties and temperature on SRP flowfields.
