Abstract

The study investigates the impact of nickel-ligated catalysts derived from tall oil (NiTO) and sunflower oil (NiSFO) on the kinetics and thermodynamics of heavy oil oxidation. Using thermogravimetric analysis and kinetic modeling, the authors demonstrate that these catalysts significantly alter the thermal degradation behavior and activation energy of heavy oil. NiTO promotes a more rapid and efficient degradation, while NiSFO facilitates a controlled thermal breakdown. The thermodynamic analysis reveals that both catalysts enhance the spontaneity of the oxidation reaction, with NiSFO showing a pronounced effect at lower conversions. These findings have significant implications for optimizing in-situ combustion processes in enhanced oil recovery, highlighting the potential of bio-derived catalysts in improving the economic and environmental viability of heavy oil upgrading.
