Abstract

The study focuses on the measurement of thermophysical properties such as density, surface tension, and viscosity of Al–22.5 wt%Cu using the oscillating drop technique onboard the International Space Station (ISS-EML). This research is crucial for optimizing high-temperature metallurgical processes like atomization, welding, and additive manufacturing. The ISS-EML allows for containerless measurements, reducing the interference from container walls and providing more accurate data. The results are compared with previous experimental results and theoretical models, showing consistency and potential for building a reliable database of thermophysical properties for various metals and alloys. The challenges and limitations of the method, such as nonlinear oscillations and sample rotation, are also discussed, paving the way for future improvements in measurement techniques.
