Abstract

This chapter explores the spatial and epistemic configurations of thinking-with sounds, challenging Western, rational, euro- and androcentric conceptions of knowledge production. It presents three sets of practices that engage with sound, space, and place in different ways, including the sound art of Maryanne Amacher, Indigenous knowledges in Australia, and Black Quantum Futurism in Philadelphia. The chapter argues that these practices contribute to the exploration of 'placing' as methods for knowledge formation and challenge methods of 'place-making' through their ontological and epistemological implications. It also discusses the importance of adopting a 'critical listening positionality' and the potential for sound art to become part of research methods in fields beyond artistic or academic production. The chapter concludes with a score for deep listening, inviting readers to engage with the practices presented and consider new modes of engagement with knowledge and sound.
