Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical factors influencing landslide susceptibility in the Western Ghats of Kerala, India, with a specific focus on the Kavalappara region. The study employs advanced 3D slope stability modeling using Scoops3D software to evaluate the impact of different groundwater conditions on slope stability. Key topics include the assessment of Factor of Safety (FoS) under varying groundwater scenarios, the identification of potential failure volumes and slip surfaces, and the analysis of how groundwater levels affect landslide risks. The research reveals that increased groundwater levels significantly reduce slope stability, leading to a higher likelihood of landslides. The study concludes that understanding and integrating hydrological factors are crucial for effective landslide risk management in the region. Additionally, the chapter discusses the methodology used for data acquisition and preparation, including the use of high-resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and soil property analysis. The findings highlight the importance of considering groundwater conditions in slope stability assessments to mitigate landslide risks and protect vulnerable communities.
