Abstract

The chapter delves into the structural design of the Energy Transfer Station (ETS) and Wet Well (WW) shaft for the Toronto Western Hospital's wastewater energy transfer system. It begins with an overview of the project's goals, including significant reductions in energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The ETS building, originally an unused bank structure, was retrofitted to house heavy industrial equipment. The design process involved careful consideration of the existing structure's stability and the integration of new internal steel structures. The chapter also discusses the construction challenges and the use of micropiles for foundation support. The WW shaft, a reinforced concrete structure extending 39 meters below grade, was designed to divert and screen wastewater. It features a unique internal structure with wingwalls to isolate flows and accommodate maintenance. The design process involved advanced finite element modeling to ensure the shaft's durability in a corrosive environment. The chapter concludes with the project's potential to serve as a proof-of-concept for future wastewater energy transfer systems.
