Nam Dong, a mountainous district in Thua Thien Hue province, is located on the southwest of Hue city. According to 2017 statistical data, its area is 64,777.9 km² with 11,945 Cotu inhabitants, which constitute 70% Cotu ethnic minority in Thua Thien Hue province.

According to previous surveys, Cotu ethnic group has 17 body-based units (Kobayashi and Nguyen 2013). However, based on the interview with 25 patriarchs in Nam Dong district in 2018, Cotu ethnic group was found to have one more unit for measurement, design, and construction.
