Abstract

This chapter examines the rise of VTubers in China, focusing on the ASOUL VTuber group and their livestreams. It explores the affective practices of VTubers and their impact on viewers, highlighting the convergence of the virtual and the ordinary in shaping the future of Chinese media. The chapter also delves into the concept of digital affect and its role in creating alternative narratives of the future. Additionally, it discusses the implications of VTubers on the Chinese digital culture and the potential for further research in this area. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding the everyday struggles and cultural/ethical maladjustment caused by technological advances in more localities, especially in the Global South.
