Zusammenfassung

In the past years, resilience has turned into one of the major buzzwords in urban studies as well as in urban politics. This coincides with seemingly diverse and expanding challenges cities across the world have been exposed to in the past years (such as the simultaneity of old and new economies, their function as entry points for migrants and refugees, various sorts of perceived security threats, climate change, growing urban-rural polarisation, issues of exclusion and marginalisation, urban protest movements, increasing global competition and so on). Increasingly, policy makers and urban planners see the promotion of resilience as a promising way forward at times when it seems to be more and more difficult to respond to challenges impossible to predict. For many, resilience is the key to the governance of complexity. But, to what extent is the notion of urban resilience a useful approach in this context? And what understanding of resilience should we follow? Based on a review of the current relation of urban planning to these new forms of uncertainty, this chapter discusses the limits and opportunities of the resilience machine out of a critical urban and regional studies perspective.
