Abstract

This chapter delves into the significance of materiality in interactive tangible storytelling, exploring how physical objects and their material qualities enhance narrative experiences. It discusses the shift from graphic interfaces to material-centred interaction design, emphasizing the role of sensory engagement in shaping perception and narrative immersion. The text analyzes key conceptual frameworks that understand the roles of artefacts within narrative systems, such as the Tangible Narrative Framework and the Tangible and Embodied Narrative Framework (TENF). These frameworks provide principles and methods for integrating physical artefacts into storytelling, considering aspects like diegesis, narrative function, and user agency. The chapter also presents design cases like Button Portraits, Shiva’s Rangoli, and KaavadBits, illustrating how physical objects support interactive storytelling. It concludes by reflecting on the field's significance and outlining future research directions, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary integration and empirical validation of these concepts.
