Abstract

This chapter delves into the potential of Digital Twins (DTs) to revolutionize urban planning by providing real-time data analysis, simulation, and visualization capabilities. It highlights the challenges of current DT implementations, such as technological fragmentation, lack of user engagement, and fragmented data ecosystems. The paper argues for a modular perspective on DTs, treating them as advanced information systems integrated into broader IT/IS landscapes. It discusses the need for architectural coordination, stakeholder engagement, and a strategic outlook to ensure the socio-economical sustainability of DTs. The chapter also explores key DT functions, including sensing, actuating, deriving, and interacting, and their cost/benefit trade-offs. It concludes by outlining the principles and ingredients for an Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) framework tailored to DT development in urban planning, emphasizing the importance of a holistic and strategic approach.
