Abstract

The chapter introduces NN-kNN, a neural network model designed for case-based reasoning that addresses the interpretability challenges of traditional neural networks. By incorporating k-NN principles, NN-kNN ensures that its predictions can be fully explained through the activation of relevant cases. The model is trained end-to-end, integrating feature extraction, similarity metrics, and adaptation methods within a single neural network framework. This approach not only enhances interpretability but also achieves high accuracy in various classification and regression tasks. The chapter discusses the architecture and training of NN-kNN, comparing its performance with other methods through computational experiments. Additionally, it explores the benefits of NN-kNN in terms of simplicity, harmonization of CBR processes, and potential for integration with other neural network modules. The chapter concludes by highlighting the potential of NN-kNN as a foundation for future interpretable AI models.
