Abstract

This study delves into the traffic flow characteristics of a two-lane undivided road with inclusive motorized two-wheeler (MTW) lanes, focusing on the corridor between Muvattupuzha and Vengalloor in Kerala, India. By establishing the speed-flow-density relationship, the research assesses the capacity and level of service (LOS) of the road, both quantitatively and qualitatively. The study also investigates the impact of roadside frictions, such as pedestrian activity and pavement edge drops, on traffic flow characteristics. A comparative analysis of vehicle speeds on roads with and without MTW lanes reveals that the presence of MTW lanes generally leads to higher vehicle speeds and improved traffic flow. The study concludes that inclusive MTW lanes can enhance the operational performance of two-lane undivided roads, but the presence of side frictions can significantly impact these benefits. This research provides valuable insights for traffic engineers and planners looking to optimize road infrastructure and improve traffic management strategies.
