Abstract

This chapter delves into the potential of Median U-Turn Intersections (MUTIs) as an alternative to conventional signalized intersections in urban areas, focusing on a case study in Hyderabad, India. The study evaluates various MUTI configurations, highlighting their impacts on traffic efficiency, safety, and environmental performance. By comparing different intersection types, the chapter reveals that MUTIs can significantly improve travel time and speed performances, particularly for minor roads, while also reducing vehicle-vehicle and vehicle-pedestrian conflicts. However, the analysis also uncovers trade-offs, such as increased exposure of pedestrians to left-turning vehicles and potential delays for certain movements. The chapter emphasizes the importance of considering public transport lines and the need for a comprehensive safety assessment framework. It also identifies research gaps in safety analysis and emission evaluation, calling for further calibration of microscopic traffic parameters. The findings underscore the necessity of a strong policy framework that aligns with urban mobility goals and addresses the needs of diverse road users. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for optimizing MUTI configurations, stressing the importance of hybrid operations and the strategic placement of median openings. By addressing these aspects, the chapter provides valuable insights for enhancing traffic management in urban centers, particularly in developing countries.
