Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate world of electric vehicle (EV) coordination within integrated local energy and transportation systems (ILETS). It explores how EVs can be managed to reduce carbon emissions, ease traffic congestion, and optimize energy consumption. The text introduces a traffic-informed approach to EV coordination, which considers the spatial and temporal variations of charging demands and their impact on both the transportation network and the power grid. It also presents a novel method for tracing carbon emissions and using this information to incentivize low-carbon charging behaviors. The chapter is structured around several key topics: the interaction between transportation networks, power grids, and EV charging loads; the use of traffic user equilibrium (TUE) models to optimize EV path flow and charging demands; the application of carbon flow tracing to determine the carbon intensity of different charging locations; and the use of bi-level optimization to coordinate EV charging within the ILETS. The chapter concludes with two case studies that validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods in reducing carbon emissions and improving the overall operation of the ILETS. The first case study involves a simple 6-node test system, while the second is based on a real-world ILETS in Nanjing, China. Both studies demonstrate the potential of the proposed methods to significantly reduce carbon emissions and improve the efficiency of the ILETS.
